I am insanely lucky to be a poet here in Victoria not only because it seems to have the most poets per capita in all of Canada but also because it has an incredible weekly reading series with a 30 year history known as Planet Earth Poetry. Planet Earth Poetry and the poets who frequent its events have played a huge role in building my confidence as a poet and allowing me to practice stepping out into the world as an emerging writer. One initiative they had for some time was to hire “poetic openers” to do a short reading before their featured reader. I have had the privilege of being a poetic opener twice, once opening for the glorious Rhona McAdam and once for the wonderful D A Lockhart.
